Rhodes College is a private, coeducational college of liberal arts and sciences associated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). It aspires to graduate students with a lifelong passion for learning, a compassion for others, and the ability to translate academic study and personal concern into effective leadership and action in their communities and the world.
Rhodes is one of a few selective private colleges located in a major city. Set on 100 tree-shaded acres, its collegiate Gothic campus is located near the Memphis Zoo, Memphis Brooks Museum of Art and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, all of which provide students internship and research opportunities.
About 80 percent of Rhodes students engage in service through schools, hospitals, multicultural programs and environmental programs.
Students have emerged as leaders and achievers by commissioning and overseeing the installation of a five-story mural in downtown Memphis, conducting cancer research, rescuing a Nazi-seized Torah from the Czech Republic, launching a men’s clothing line, interning at the Beijing Olympics, and testing physics experiments at NASA’s facilities in Houston.
Students also engage in research one-on-one with faulty mentors, both on and off campus, learning as they go while providing valuable aid to their professors. Often students present their findings at professional conferences, and their work is frequently published in professional journals.
The Rhodes Student Associates Program is a nationally recognized on-campus employment program that builds student expertise and resumes by paying attractive wages to do jobs that would otherwise require additional professionals.
Outside the classroom, about 65 percent of Rhodes students study abroad and about 75 percent participate in academic internships with more than 100 local, national and international employers.
All over the country, Rhodes graduates are forging new territory in their chosen fields.
