Italy & Germany to Host FISU World University Games in 2025

The FISU World University Games, which were previously known as Universiade, organized for university athletes, will take place in two large European countries, Italy and Germany.

The winter edition will be held in Turin, Italy, while during summer Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia, the region of the Rhine-Ruhr, will be the host of the FISU World University Games which will welcome around 10,000 athletes from 170 countries of the world, Erudera.com reports.

“It is an honor and a privilege to have the chance to experience the emotions of the 2007 edition once again. This event will promote our territory and Turin as a city with a strong academic vocation. It will be a unique opportunity for the Italian university sport movement,” President of CUS Torino Riccardo D’Elicio said after FISU Executive Committee took the decision to attribute the Turin 2025 FISU World University Games.

At the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games, participants will compete in 18 sports games over 12 days. The competitions will take place in the following cities:

• Bochum
• Duisburg
• Düsseldorf
• Essen
• Mülheim an der Ruhr

Germany’s Minister of Interior Horst Seehofer said he is optimistic that student world games will be an “unforgettable sporting event”.

Whereas, the acting FISU President Leonz Eder said that one of the most remarkable memories of FISU remains the Universiade 1989 in Duisburg, which was hosted in just six months.

“The concept for the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games, which was convincing in several respects, was very well presented by several student world championships, including beach volleyball in Munich and horse riding in Aachenwas developed by the adh in close cooperation with the FISU,” Eder said.

The FISU World University Games are held every two years, in winter and summer, by the International University Sports Federation – the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU).

The sports which will be part of the program for the summer edition of the FISU World University Games include:

• badminton
• basketball
• archery
• fencing
• apparatus gymnastics
• judo
• athletics
• rhythmic gymnastics
• swimming
• taekwondo
• tennis
• table tennis
• volleyball
• water polo
• water jumping

According to the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Armin Laschet, the authorities of the region are looking forward to welcoming athletes from countries of the world to the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games, highlighting that North Rhine-Westphalia is the number one sporting state and the place for top-class international competitions.

Students at the age of 25 or above who have been nominated by their national associations will be eligible to participate in the FISU World University Games.

Some of the well-known German personalities participating in these games include Jörg Ahmann,  Dr. Sabine Bau, Ole Bischoff, Karla Borger, Britta Büthe, Heide Ecker-Rosendahl, Ariane Friedrich, Eberhard Gienger, Dr. Thomas Bach and many more.

These games will be held in Germany for the first time after 1989 and are the world’s largest multisport event after the Olympics and Paralympic.
