The University of Michigan has received more than 105,000 applications for this fall, a new record high. This surge highlights the growing interest among prospective first-year and transfer students in attending the university for the fall 2024 term.

Data indicate that over 98,400 prospective first-year students have submitted applications, an increase of 12 percent from the previous year when about 88,000 applied to the university, Erudera.com reports.

Vice provost for enrollment management, Adele C. Brumfield, stressed, among others, the importance of education provided at the University of Michigan, delivered by an exceptional faculty using technologies designed to enhance students’ educational experience.

“Our exceptional faculty, cutting-edge facilities and technologies designed to enhance the educational experience, and vibrant campus environment are just a few of the numerous factors driving the increasing interest in our university from high-achieving students,” Brumfield said.

The school said that increases in students from low-income backgrounds, first-generation students, and domestic and international students have contributed to the overall number of applications.

According to data released by The University Record, the official source for University of Michigan news, the following increases in respective groups of students have contributed to the overall figure:

  • Low-income students - 17 percent
  • Students of color - 15 percent
  • Out-of-state domestic students - 14 percent
  • First-generation students - 14 percent
  • International students - 12 percent
  • In-state students - 3 percent

Additionally, the admission office reported a 12 percent increase in the number of transfer students applying to the university. For this fall, nearly 6,675 transfer students applied.

“Our aim is to attract and develop a dynamic and diverse incoming undergraduate class by showcasing the rich array of academic and extracurricular opportunities at U-M and by highlighting the impact a U-M education can have on future achievements,” said Erica L. Sanders, assistant vice provost and executive director of undergraduate admissions.

The University of Michigan has already sent admission offers to first-year and transfer students, and the deadline for the latter to accept these offers is May 1, 2024. The school has also planned to host events where students and their families can get more information about studies at U-M and be encouraged to accept their offers.

According to US News and World Report, the University of Michigan is the third-best US public university. Its Ann Arbor campus has over 33,400 undergraduate students, its Dearborn campus has over 6,000, and its Flint campus has 4,751.

The university’s data indicates that these undergraduate students hail from all 50 US states and more than 100 other countries. There are more than 1,600 student organizations and more than 30 student groups at U-M.
