More Women Than Men Graduate as University Specialists in Croatia During 2021, Statistics Show

There were more women than men among university specialists in Croatia during 2021, according to data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics.

Figures show that 521 university specialists received their degree last year, with 345 or 66.2 percent of them being women, Erudera.com reports.

The percentage of university postgraduate specialists at universities across Croatia was as follows:

  • 57.6 percent at the University of Zagreb
  • 18.4 percent at the University of Rijeka
  • 14.5 percent at the University of Osijek
  • 5.2 percent at the University of Split
  • 1.9 percent at the University North, Koprivnica
  • 0.8 percent (respectively) at the Libertas International University and at the University of Pula – Pola
  • 0.6 percent at the University of Zadar
  • 0.2 percent at the University of Slavonski Brod

According to statistics, the highest share of female university specialists (100 percent) obtained their degree from the University of Zadar and at the Libertas International University, followed by the University North, Koprivnica, where 80 percent of women received their degree, the University of Osijek with 78.9 percent, and the University of Zagreb with 64.3 percent.

Another share of female university specialists received their degrees at the following institutions:

  • University of Split (62.9 percent)
  • University of Rijeka (60.4 percent)
  • University of Pula – Pola (50.0 percent)

Differently, no female university specialists attended the University of Slavonski Brod.

In 2021, most specialist theses – about 40,7 percent, were done in the field of social sciences, followed by biomedicine and health (38.0 percent), engineering (7.3 percent), interdisciplinary fields of science (6.5 percent), biotechnical sciences (3.8 percent), natural sciences (1.7 percent), artistic field (1.2 percent) and humanities (0.8 percent).

The majority (36.3 percent) of the university specialists, including women and men, were aged 30-34, whereas a smaller group (6.3 percent) belonged to the 50-and-over age group.

“There were 8.1% of university specialists in the up-to-29 age group, 25.1% in the 35 – 39 age group, 13.4% in the 40 – 44 age group and 10.8% in the 45 – 49 age group,” a press release issued by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics reads.

Data have further revealed that 28.6 percent of university specialists were employed in the human health and social work fields and 17.5 percent in compulsory social security.

9.8 percent of university specialists were employed in the following fields (respectively):

  • Professional, scientific and technical activities
  • Wholesale and retail trade
  • Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

Other areas where university specialists were employed during 2021 include education, financial and insurance activities, manufacturing, electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply.

Data also indicate that 50.7 percent of university specialists had their postgraduate study costs covered by employers, 46.6 percent supported themselves, while 2.7 percent were classified in the category other.
